Bob's Comet

Bob's Comet

Bob's Comet

There's a little known comet that flashes around the sun very, very quickly. Since I thought of seeing it first, I call it Bob's comet. It moves so fast that you can't even see it, like the propellers on a plane, but it burns up all the "usual" where it flies, and it has a habit of flying between the eyes of everyone in the world who's doing one thing. For instance, as I was washing dishes Bob's comet flew between my eyes and the dishes I was washing at the same time it flew between the dishes and everyone's else's eyes who were washing dishes. What happened? I found that the dishes enjoyed being washed, liked being put in the rack to dry next to their neighbors, and that I wasn't doing the dishes, but BOTH I AND the dishes were mixed all up together so that you couldn't tell whether I was doing the dishes or the dishes were doing me. We were all in it together. And don't ask the kitchen sink, because it just loved all that soapy water sloshing around in it, and the soap enjoyed being totally used up in getting rid of the grease and dirt and soup stains and coffee grounds and bacon rinds from the plates and knives and forks and spoons. It might fly in front of your eyes when you're mowing the lawn, and all of a sudden all the grass is happy to be trimmed down to a neat height. Sidewalks enjoy being relieved of their coverings of snow, tables giggle while being dusted, even these words nod and buzz together as I type them at the typewriter, which is very satisfied to be used in doing what it can do so well. Bob's comet doesn't come around very often, but it's a good thing that it does, because it helps to have the "usual" burned up every so often: it makes things look brighter and newer and more different than they ever looked before. It's as if the words "the same as" just didn't exist. This dirty plate is different from this clean plate is different from this next clean plate, even though the two clean plates might look the same with all the "usual" intact. It's a little like a light that's shining at a different frequency, just as a dog whistle shrills at a slightly different frequency from the one we can hear. Bob's comet is LIKE a lot of those things, but it really IS only Bob's comet!
