Velikovsky's first course at the New School, September 29, 1964. Notes.
He had Worlds in Collision in manuscript 18 years go, and showed it first to some professor in the New School. "I should not stop at the hedges of science, but cross them." "Every field of social studies will be affected." History is NOT a science. Mythology of race is identical to early memories of an individual. Matterhorn: top has older fossils than the bottom. Starts with "Earth stood still in Joshua." Assyrian: 100,000 cuneiform tablets on Astronomy in British Museum. Ancient calendars and star systems don't work. Schaeffer again (Ras Shamra and Ugarit) (annihilated VS decimated?). Only poor VAGRANTS left after collapse of civilizations. WIC, EIU, and AIC NOT included in this course. Alignment of Egypt and Bible history---off. Amazing---he remembers 60 years, history is 6000 years; he remembers 1% of man's history!! BONES in Civalic (Siwalic) hills north of New Delhi, foothills of Himalayas: turtle with 20-foot shell, elephant tusks 3 feet in circumference and four feet long, Darwin: Absence of intermediate varieties due to "extreme imperfection of geological record." Cumberland Cave in Maryland FULL of animals. ANCIENT fish of Agassiz "much more developed" than modern fish. CATACLYSMIC EVOLUTION: magnetic lava research and curie point 550 Celsius poles reversed repeatedly and suddenly. Per Prof Rankin: Sept, 1955, Scientific American (?). Stewart (from 51 Harper debates) will today not support his original views. Neissen of Columbia discovered CANYON in mid-oceanic mountains. 1958: Ewing and Wortzel (of Wortzel ash) found UNIFORM ash in Pacific. Valparaiso: snails 1000 feet high---terraces in snow in Andes. Radiocarbon says mammoths lived second millennium BC. Alexis Carrell: Scientists can easily believe that facts that don't fit into their scheme in science simply DO NOT EXIST. NEW species not fertile with old species, but species fertile with ANYONE must be fertile with next---NEW plants grew in RADIOACTIVE craters. Velikovsky II: October 13: Aristarches jeered by Archimeder. Edison said AC harmful to humans---and people hate fluorides in water. "Harvard College was grounded in 1630." Newton said "God from time to time intervenes to correct the earth's orbit." Laplace was first to say "earth's orbit varies." Laplace in later age said "a comet, IF it flew in the face of the earth, would cause---" and then repeated V. Mammals---mammae!! Got into Jupiter and Venus. Sun and Moon regarded as minor compared with Jupiter---king of gods---Jupiter subject of sequel to WIC. Venus is his star witness---Jupiter erupted and gave up Venus first as a proto-planet, than as a planet. Intervals of 50 years, starting with Exodus. Modern Arabians worship Venus, as Mohammed did (?). Iliad about solar battles. St. Augustine in "City of God" quotes Vero, ancient Roman, who quotes ancients, that Venus changed her appearance and period (?!) CALENDARS, CHECK EB. Herodotus said "FOUR times since Egypt was a kingdom, the sun has changed---TWICE rose in east, TWICE in west. Prof. Pritchard digging in Ch'am in Palestine found two temple foundations off by 5°. Prof. Xavier Kugler, of Jesuits, last little book asks "What's WRONG before 700 BC?" If Antarctica was once at the equator to get coal, it must have had forests, and if forests, LIFE. Could Atlantis have been covered with ice to become Antarctica? What's UNDER ANTARCTIC ICE???? Asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. Something NEW? One passed 350,000 miles from earth recently. Regarded as broken fragments of planet, OR they may be fragments from collision between Venus and Mars---he would not judge. Canals of Mars from the great stresses to which it was subjected, V told a NASA spokesman LAST WEEK---close contact with Mars caused plagues on earth---there are dangerous microorganisms---there are dangerous gasses. Leave the sick before they can return. THIS is what I came to hear him for. Moon has sharp craters (modern science equally divided between asteroids and volcanic action)---then it's recent. BUT, there is no atmosphere, no wind, no rain, so there is NO erosion. BUT, V says that the temperature changes would cause fragmentation of rock. Is THIS true? You can only teach theory of uniformity on moonless night. This is wishful thinking, based on no physical law. Mariner III discovered that solar winds and magnetic effects in universe are permanent. From 20,000 miles, Venus is covered with layer of 15 miles of atmosphere. This layer is 45 miles above surface of Venus, composed of gasses and hydrocarbons, and the surface is HOT, not 600° F as found by radio signals in 1960---800° F this time. Venus rotates slowly, BUT RETROGRADELY, a sign of CAPTURE. Hydrocarbons also found on meteorites. "Hydrocarbons of recent formation---in Gulf of Mexico, radiocarbon dating produced an age of 9000 years, with age of deposition between then and now. No comet, or those in existence today, could have lasted more than a couple thousand years due to RAPID loss of luminosity. Binary stars change in ways that astonish astronomers. They lose mass, they change their periodicity of variability (light and dark). 6 months ago, front page of TIMES said Jupiter changed its velocity of rotation by 1.3 seconds---IMMENSE QUANTITY OF ENERGY.

Velikovsky III: October 27: Gilbert was a physician by profession. Huygens came up with waves, Descartes came up with corpuscles. Descartes (helped by Voltaire) said "CAN have acting through distance." Faraday (1845) light is electromagnetic waves, traveling in ether. 1905 (Relativity---Special Theory) Measurement of time and distance no longer a constant---depends on relative motion. Only the velocity of light in vacuum is constant. Einstein ALSO said light traveled in photon-packets. Pluto found to be too small to explain variant in Neptune and Uranus. 1915 (General Theory of Relativity) Einstein's gravity: a body creates a curvature in space. Erratic motion of Mercury explained by sun's curvature of space (42 seconds of arc) around it. Eddington said Einstein's general theory explained all mysteries. Questions left: 1) Why is sun round, a GAS should be ??? . But, if anything, the sun is ??? . 2) Why does sun rotate at different speeds at different places? 3) Comet's tail swings around sun almost at speed of light. "Light pressure" from sun is inadequate quantitatively. Pliny states: Planets may exchange sparks. Balam is the kiss. V realized that Venus's attaining a circular orbit after collision was rare. "This was probably the greatest source of trouble in WIC." April 5, 1955, NY Times, Jupiter emits radio noises. 4) Pluto, small, perturbs Saturn and Uranus. 5) Solar flares are not ??? but ??? . ALL THESE PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED THROUGH THE ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF SOLAR SYSTEM. Newton, in third volume (at end) of Principia, postulated electromatic nature of nervous system, solar system, and sun. ALSO problem of space travel: billions of volts of difference in charge between planets. Another problem---could earth's magnetosphere influence moon's librations? V did NOT suggest that the solar system is NOT a quantum mechanical system. In summer, 1969, rotation of earth slowed by .83 millisecond. "Times tremendously exaggerated by saying .1 second." Next day it speeded by microseconds. April 1964 Jupiter changed 1.3 seconds in velocity of rotation. Explained by solar flares?? Artificial satellites were not QUITE as they should move, and they thought the earth MAY be pear-shaped. But solar WINDS may do away for NEED of this theory. Venus came from Jupiter's red spot---came to mind of many of his readers. V has no proof. Radio noise comes from four points, change of revolution seems to agree with this and red spot. Oct 26, 1964, NY Times, light signals from Pegasus. Birth of Venus from Jupiter took place in FAR past, and POSSIBLE new book will deal with this.
Velikovsky IV: November 10: He identifies with Bruno (Bruno was burned). Previous lectures about evidence that he collected. Today he defends PROOFS that he GAVE. 1) Claude Schaffer came to SAME conclusions of excavation evidence. 2) Crucial tests have been made to PROVE his theory: Radio noise from Jupiter; Magnetosphere around earth; high temperature of Venus. Venus had two (imaginary) satellites (??). Galileo said "Venus shows faces like the moon; Jupiter rotates, and has a red spot." 3) Yale, 1950: Mexico civilization only started in 0 AD, then put back to 1000 BC, when V said. 4) Civilization will be found at mouth of Colima River of Siberia. 5) All civilizations DO recall cosmic cataclysm. 6) Oct. 1953, Jupiter emits radio noises---one year later, they found it. 7) Magnetosphere predicted in 1955, discovered in 1958. 8) Solar magnetization predicted in 1955, discovered in 1960. 9) Star witness, Venus, in 1946 predicted hydrocarbons---1963: atmosphere 15 miles thick 45 miles above planet. 10) Venus hot: 1950; Mariner III, 1963: 800° F. 11) Venus rotates retrogradely. 12) Venus hotter on DARK side. If there is oxygen on Venus, there may be petroleum fires. MOON participated in Worlds in Collision?? Near approach of Jupiter and Saturn caused expulsion of Venus?? Wilson, of New Zealand, in Nature, created polymerized hydrocarbons by passing sparks through ammonia and methane. CHECK? Pliny said Lake Balzinus (site of Bolzena, capital of Etruscan civilization) destroyed by bolt from Mars. What does Virgil say about Bolzena? Lightning striking a MAGNET changed its poles---is this TRUE? Fields of POTASH where charges hit. They ARE around, in Chile. #5 and 6 of Velikovsky in May, 1965---7.

Velikovsky V: Psychology. Psychological aspects: (1) Memories of races, should be dealt with in individual dreams; and trauma of race-trauma of person. (2) Collective Amnesia---Aristotle: Law: People FORGET cataclysms. In face of such catastrophe, man made ONE conclusion: he was GUILTY, so that after EACH catastrophe, they strive to change, to be different, to avoid further catastrophe. Midrash states: Man became carnivorous only AFTER Deluge. Quetzalcoatl died and became VENUS (no grave). Zoroaster ALSO in time of chaos became Venus. All civilizations FEAR planetary bodies. Phoenicia and Rhodes and Carthage, who sacrifice to Moloch, Chronos, Saturn. "Brother against brother, WOLF-time, SWORD-time." Immense WANDERLUST. "Disaster" from ASTRA---STAR! Nicola Boulanger, in the last part of the 17th century, said humankind lives in terror and many actions, emotions, beliefs come from these catastrophes in past. So Velikovsky is NOT first. How STRONG must have been the imprint of these immense conflagrations on the survivors. Darwin EXCHANGED the horrible thought that man is no different from animals (continuous evolution) for the idea of STABILITY of the world (nothing can disturb it.) (((Between the noise of the rasped dry breath of the man at left rear, the absurd moist munch of the knitting lady to right rear, and the absurd wave of heat into the center of the room, I moved to the wall, enjoying the silence, the absence of people, and the coolness of the wall))). The fear of the scientists who fight Velikovsky are fears from the cataclysms. The fears of the subconscious, the forgettings, must be BROUGHT to consciousness, or it takes strange forms. VELIKOVSKY IS TRYING TO PSYCHOANALYZE THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE. Lemmings race to the sea---fear. Locusts, every 17 years, swarm---clock. 24-hour clocks OK, but 25-hour clocks a remnant of longer day. Fear of end of world at Christ's time because of FORMER catastrophes in 1500 BC, in 750 BC, and in 0 BC NEXT?? Every 104 years we have a major war? 1700-1709: Charles XII of Sweden invaded Europe, defeated by Peter the Great in 1709. Napoleon fights at Austerlitz, Waterloo: 1805-1814. In 1914-1918: World War I. In the middles of the periods: 1756-63, 7 Years War (England and Austria and Germany and France). In 1961-65---American Civil War. World War II in 26 years. Next war is 1969???? "What happened in those days completely changed the emotions and society of the human race. To touch the source invites hostility." From one of V's readers. V EXPECTED the reaction. Cozzens, before WIC came out, in Saturday Review, wrote story that scientists, to unite world gripped in fear of A and H bombs, would start a plea of common danger that a comet was threatening the earth. Howard Ickes: January, 1950, "V has inspired such terror to make A and H bombs hold NO fear," one month after WIC. In psychoanalysis, making the diagnosis is the majority of the curative process. VELIKOVSKY IS TRYING TO BRING WORLD PEACE. Noah's ark took survivors away from flood, space rockets may take survivors from nuclear holocaust. James Forrestal, Secretary of Defense, ran into street screaming Russia had invaded America. What if he'd pressed the button? Individuals have written V, telling of their dreams of cometary catastrophes. Another of hallucination of planetary upheaval. Karl Jung says people have traumatic memories. Jung quoted dreams of this nature. "We have a problem that surpasses every other problem. It surpasses everything." "It invaded geology, paleontology, astronomy, evolution, religion, psychology, physics. It invades each of our behaviors as an individual, as members of group, as class, as country, as member of human race. I don't talk penance---I carry no sign "Doomsday is near." I want to make THIS field of research NOT the effort of a single author. The future of humankind is rooted in his understanding of the great traumatic events that overwhelmed his forefathers. Idea of 26 coming from 62 can be tested if ANOTHER holocaust OCCURS in 26 years---can only guess WHY. Einstein's theory of relativity relied on bending of space by gravity---now the electromagnetic nature might change and the solar plasma discovered recently might change this theory. He suggests retrying Michelson Morley with LASER. V's fear would be an acquired characteristic. Russians today beginning to believe this, like Lamarck. X-rays can CREATE species, and this force much stronger than environment. Thus, if the influence is evident enough, people WERE changed. We have a "gene of fear." MY musing: what would happen if we LOST this gene?? The germ plasma remembers the chaos. Einstein and Freud corresponded in letters: "Why War?" War's reasons are not known, psychologist must solve it. If ONE generation understands it, the world is OK, but man is made into animals as long as this is in the dark---then occurs war and death and inquisition. "If my audience today were larger, if my ideas were repeated in books and articles, I might have a better hope for the "cure" of the world." Time under the age of Chronus, Saturn, was a human race living in a golden age. This might be "pre-time." "I know when the LAST (catastrophe) was, but I don't know when the first was---it's beyond written history, but ALL civilizations have legends of a golden age, a garden of Eden, a PAST of peace. In the time of "Chronus" a long series of catastrophes changed the primitive man to the modern man. Man can TALK with humans on the other side of the world, but can't CONVERSE with his neighbor. He has wonderful ways of TALKING before answering, giving himself a chance to think. Retrograde satellites MIGHT fit into his theory. Electromagnetic fields affect the human, makes him nervous or elated. Could electromagnetic field affect the human mind in the SAME WAY as the fear? Is this electromagnetic field ITSELF the FEAR?? Radio signals from Jupiter, if printed in a medical journal, would be mistaken for the electroencephalic recording of an epileptic. Mice in 5000 gauss live twice as long, FLOWERS are affected by electromagnetism. Such incredible fields open up!!!.

Velikovsky VI (December 8, 1964): Former troubles with publication: Jenner, Ohm (never teach in German school), Heaviside. Second century BC, Chinese emperor ordered all documents burned. Inquisitors and Nazis burned books. Prof. Stakins at U. of Chicago---told to petition book banned, regardless that he hadn't read it. Lafleur in Science Monthly REVIEWED book two years later. This IS the first time Velikovsky has talked. "If my spoken English is not so good, I still can write." OH, no you can't. HE IS UNDOUBTEDLY A LOUSY SPEAKER. Atwater (fired from Hayden Planetarium) was THERE. Jim Patnam (fired from MacMillan---which is only down the block, on Fifth, from the New School) was THERE. "I ask you to answer me, if I am right if I repeat that I am NOT defeated." About the matter of cosmic radiation and its relation to the science of carbon dating. There's LESS cosmic radiation coming in NOW than BEFORE, which implies a MAXIMUM sometimes in the past. Since the impacts on the carbon NOW are LESS than they were in the past, any estimates of time BETWEEN now and then, since there was MORE activity in the past, would be OVER-estimated; thus what REALLY took place in 2000 is now THOUGHT to take place in 2200, since at the present LOW rate it would take the extra 200 years to produce the current effect. Thus the ACTUAL 4000 becomes an erroneous 4800. I didn't know the name of the author of the Scientific American article, but V could tell ME he KNEW Tellier's work. 700 BC - 800 BC Attic ware was fired CLOSER to the SOUTH magnetic pole than to the NORTH magnetic pole. EARTH'S Magnetism---S.K. Runcorn Sci Am 193:152-4---4 Sept '55: Diagram: Centers of irregular component in Missouri, Tristan de Cunha, and Peking. Residual field of a tripole. "Core of the earth much too hot to be permanently magnetized. Residual field slowly moving westward around earth. Travels full circle around world in 1600 years. Pole wandered during 600M and 100M BC. During Tertiary (60M - 1M BC) north and south geomagnetic poles reversed places several times. Today there can no longer be much doubt that it is generated by electric currents due to motions of material in the interior. Westward drift: we must suppose the core of the earth is turning within the mantle around it. Core goes from E to W more slowly than the mantle. 1897, earth's rotation speeded up by .003 seconds/day. In 1914 decreased by the same amount. From time to time the currents died out and then started in the opposite direction. We must suppose outside is FIELD of earth. Electron current flow to PRODUCE field is shown by black lines along surface of core. Friction? Electrostatics?
ELECTRIC mole field in core, inside, current outside. THIS field: can't be observed on surface. Reversal of poles with this model can be explained by assuming certain plausible changes in the pattern in convective movement of liquid in the core, caused possibly by self-exciting dynamo mechanics involving the core and the mantle."
History in bricks (Science and the Citizen): Sci Am 196:64 Feb "57: Magnetic field decreased in last 2000 years---E. and O. Thillier (French). TODAY'S FIELD is 18% weaker than in 1465, 35% than in 200.
Recent paper in NATURE by Elsner of Utah. Thus intensity of cosmic rays increased, since field deflects cosmic ray particles away from earth. Thus the rate of formation of carbon 14 in the upper air has changed, and radiocarbon dating is wrong. Error for 1700-year-old samples about 240 years, for 4000-year-old sample, as many as 1000 years.
